Useful information for playing VATICAN The Board Game
Originally uninhabited, this hilly area of ancient Rome was considered sacred long before the beginning of Christianity. The present Vatican City State is named after this part of Rome.
The first church was built in 326 on St. Peter’s supposed burial site and from then on the area attracted many more people. When the Papal States (originally ruled by the pope as a secular monarch) and Rome itself became part of the new Kingdom of Italy in the 19th century, provision had to be made for an entity that could house the seat of government for the Catholic Church. This was finally provided by the three Lateran treaties. Signed with the Mussolini government on February 11, 1929, these treaties established the sovereignty of the Vatican City State.
By playing VATICAN The Board Game, you can learn a great deal about the Vatican City State and the workings of the institutions of papal government situated within its territory.
