The Conclave

Useful information for playing VATICAN The Board Game

In modern times the election of a new Pope takes place in a “conclave” held in the Sistine Chapel. The term “conclave” is derived from the ancient practice of locking in the Cardinal Electors (cum clavi) until they elected his successor.

On the day the conclave begins, the Cardinal Electors celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. That afternoon they enter the Sistine Chapel for the opening ceremonies. All persons not connected with the actual proceedings are ordered out of the chapel.

The Cardinals hear a meditation urging them to act “having only God before their eyes.” After the meditation voting can get under way, and the Cardinals proceed to vote until one of their number receives a two-thirds vote.

If no Cardinal receives a two-thirds vote after about twelve days and approximately 30 votes, rules instituted by John Paul II come into effect. According to these rules, an absolute majority (more than 50%) of the Cardinal Electors can set aside the two-thirds requirementand elect a Pope by absolute majority. Because recent conclaves have been quite short, it is less likely that the new rules will be used.

By playing VATICAN The Board Game,  you can learn a great deal about the Conclave and the process of electing a new pope.
