Useful information for playing VATICAN The Board Game
The Roman Catholic Church has a tradition of raising certain bishops to the rank of cardinal. Most cardinals are the Archbishops of the largest diocese in their country. Some cardinals with the rank of bishop are also heads of the administrative departments of the Vatican.
The most important responsibility of cardinals is to elect a new pope. They do this while meeting in conclave in the Sistine Chapel some two weeks after the pope has died. They also serve to advise the pope when he requests their assistance.
There are three degrees among the College of Cardinals: Ÿ | | cardinal bishops | Ÿ | | cardinal priests | Ÿ | | cardinal deacons |
All cardinals without distinction who have not reached their 80th birthday by the time of a conclave may vote for a new pope regardless of their position within the College of Cardinals.
